Decarbonizing pulp & paper industrial processes with material science, displacing conventional heat processes with Via Separations’ cutting-edge membrane separation technology.

Lyon, France, January 14th, 2025 – Via Separations, a venture-backed company renowned for its patented graphene-oxide-membrane technology platform, is implementing an innovative filtration solution for black liquor clarification and concentration. In partnering with Applexion for a sustainable Microfiltration pre-treatment system, and in collaboration with an industrial pulp & paper customer in Alberta, Canada, the team has installed and commissioned this first of a kind solution for the industry.

The partnership with Applexion encompasses the design, engineering, and commissioning of a fully electrifiable Microfiltration system, focusing overall on safety and reliability. The primary goal is to recover and concentrate pulp & paper mill spent cooking liquor, improving energy efficiency by 81% versus the traditional process – multiple effect evaporation.
